Here is a couple of shots of doorknob style caps.

    

The one on the left is ceramic, and rated .0007uF at 40kV. I used these caps in my first TC. They were pretty rugged, but did eventually blow. I wish I had known not to use them for TC work and had saved them for Marx Generators. These caps are really hard to come by, especially with the 40kV rating. Alas, I only have three left. I'm always looking for a good deal on doorknob caps, so if you know of some for sale, e-mail me!

The one on the left is a cheap plastic Russian made cap. These blow instantly upon applying anything even close to their rated voltage. If you look closely, you can see bubbles and defects in the surface of the cap. Autopsies have revealed even bigger voids inside. The moral of this story is: Don't buy cheap Russian caps. Unless you want to buy the 10 remaining ones I have ;-).
