It is essential for students to have a switch to use in experiments,
both to prevent the premature demise of batteries (and believe me, students
will roast batteries frequently if allowed) and for safety reasons. Short circuits
get hot, even with small batteries. This switch is easy to make and I insist
that ALL circuits the students build use it.
Obtain some ½" copper strips, around 16 gauge. I get mine donated
by a local sheet metal shop, where they cut them out of scraps for me. Cut a
piece 3-4" long, and drill a 1/16" hole in one end. If you don't have a drill
handy, a hole can be punched with a hammer and nail. Mount the copper strip
onto a piece of wood with a thumbtack. Use another thumbtack to hold down a
paper clip to make the contact. Bend the paper clip as shown in the picture
for easy connection of alligator clips.
