Who is MadLabs?
My love of learning was a gift given to me at an early age. My
father, a talented research scientist, would often pose questions to me, and
suggest ways in which I might find the answer. He had a way with questions that
always made them interesting and finding the answer satisfying. And when I was
having trouble finding the answers, he could always suggest another line of
research and guide me to the answer.
From a very young age, he had me exploring many aspects of the
world around me. These explorations didn't just instill a love of learning.
By hands on experimenting I gained experience in using tools, and how things
really work. This in turn empowered me in many ways. I could pose questions
and design experiments to answer them. I could build things that I wanted. I
could make nifty devices that amazed my friends and family! It gave me confidence
and the belief that if I could think it, I could do it.
This background set in motion a lifelong pattern of observation,
inquiry and experimentation that continues to this day. These childhood experiences
are my guidelines when developing Mad Labs material. Most of the equipment used
is simply constructed out of common items to show students that they can accomplish
quality experiments and projects on their own. So much science today seems to
be the realm of large laboratories and people in white coats. Not so! The goal
of Mad Labs is to bring the wonder of self-discovery to students.
