I must admit it, I love High Voltage! I have ever since I was
a kid. Big sparks and ozone combined with the display of raw power has always
fascinated me. So here are a few of the many really fun things that you can
do with high voltage.
REMEMBER: HIGH VOLTAGE CAN BE LETHAL!! EVEN
EXPERIENCED PEOPLE DIE FROM HIGH VOLTAGE EVERY YEAR!! IN MANY CASES, YOUR FIRST
MISTAKE WILL BE YOUR LAST!! IT IS UP TO YOU TO LEARN AND PRACTICE PROPER HIGH
VOLTAGE SAFETY PROCEDURES.
I have had two serious HV (High Voltage) shocks in my life, one
from ignorance, and one from carelessness. When I was about twelve, I made a
static generator out of an old turntable. It worked quite well, and having read
about Leyden jars, I went and got four one gallon jars, plastered them with
tinfoil inside and out, and hooked them up in parallel. I charged them up, and
then attempted to move one, as it was in the way of my turntable generator.
I felt the jolt rip through me, and then time seemed to stand still for an eternity.
My heart wasn't beating. I clearly remember thinking "this is it, this is how
I die, playing with mayo jars in the basement". Next thing I knew I was on the
floor, it was sometime later and my head and arm hurt for days.
The second shock occurred as an adult with a 15kv NST (neon sign
transformer). I had ear protection on, and couldn't hear the sizzle of the transformer
that I had stupidly left on. Luckily I only got one side of the transformer's
output. It felt like someone had filled my arm with napalm, and again it was
days before the last trace of pain disappeared from my shoulder.
